What BRCGS Food Safety Issue 9 Requires

BRCGS organizes food safety into 9 distinct sections. Each is audited rigorously — not all sections are weighted equally.

Section 1
Senior Mgmt Commitment

Demonstrable leadership commitment, food safety culture, KPIs and review processes — a Fundamental requirement.

Section 2
Food Safety Plan

HACCP-based food safety plan, hazard analysis, CCPs — the operational core of the standard.

Section 3
Food Safety & Quality System

Document control, internal audit, supplier approval, traceability, complaint management.

Section 4
Site Standards

Site security, layout, fabric, utilities, equipment, maintenance, housekeeping, waste, pest control.

Section 5
Product Control

Product design, allergen management, foreign body controls, weight control, product release.

Section 6
Process Control

Control of operations, labelling, packaging, calibration, microbial controls.

Section 7
Personnel

Training, personal hygiene, medical screening, protective clothing.

Sections 8 & 9
High-Risk Zones & Trade

High-risk/high-care/ambient high-care zones (Section 8) + Requirements for Traded Products (Section 9).

BRCGS Grading System

BRCGS is graded — unlike pass/fail standards. Your grade is published and visible to your customers. Higher grades mean less frequent audits and better commercial leverage.

AA / AA+

Highest grade. Zero major NCs, minimal minor NCs. Annual audit cycle. The standard hotels, retailers, and major brands look for.

A / A+

Strong grade. Some minor NCs but well-controlled. Annual audit. Acceptable for most retailer relationships.

⚠️

B / B+ / C / C+

Lower grades trigger more frequent re-audits and can affect retailer confidence. We help clients structure systems to achieve AA from first certification.

How We Implement BRCGS

A 5-step methodology from gap analysis to certification audit — typically 6-12 months for greenfield, 3-6 for companies upgrading from ISO 22000.

Gap Analysis

Audit your current state against all 9 sections of BRCGS Issue 9. Identify exactly what needs to be built, fixed, or upgraded.

System Build

Develop the BRCGS-compliant manual, HACCP plan, prerequisite programs, allergen management, foreign body controls, site standards documentation.

Site Upgrades & Implementation

Site improvements (zoning, fabric, equipment), policy rollout, traceability system implementation, supplier approval program.

Training & Internal Audit

Train food safety team, internal auditors, all staff. Conduct full internal audit cycle and pre-certification audit to find gaps before the auditor does.

Certification Audit Support

We sit beside you during the BRCGS certification audit. Strategic support on responding to findings to achieve the highest possible grade.

Industries That Need BRCGS

BRCGS is typically required when UK, European, or major global retailer chains are in your supply chain.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does BRCGS stand for?
BRCGS stands for Brand Reputation Compliance Global Standards (originally British Retail Consortium). It is a UK-developed food safety certification scheme now operating globally, owned by LGC Group and recognized by GFSI.
Is BRCGS or FSSC 22000 better for global retail?
Both are GFSI-recognized so both are accepted by major retailers. BRCGS is more common with UK and European retailers. FSSC 22000 is more common with US-headquartered chains. Some buyers accept either. If you sell to multiple regions, you may need both — the systems share considerable overlap which makes dual certification more affordable than you might expect.
What is BRCGS Issue 9?
BRCGS Issue 9 is the current version of the BRCGS Food Safety standard, published in August 2022 and mandatory for audits from February 2023. Key changes from Issue 8 include enhanced food safety culture requirements, environmental monitoring, supplier risk assessment depth, and pet food.
How is the BRCGS grade determined?
Your grade depends on the number and severity of non-conformities raised during the audit. Major non-conformities significantly downgrade you. Critical non-conformities trigger immediate certificate withdrawal. We design your system to avoid majors at the source.
How long does BRCGS implementation take?
Greenfield: 6-12 months from kickoff to certification audit. Companies already certified to ISO 22000 or FSSC 22000: 3-6 months upgrade. We give a realistic estimate after the free gap analysis.
What is the BRCGS audit duration?
Initial certification audits typically last 1-3 days on-site depending on company size, complexity, and product range. Multi-site or high-risk operations can take longer. Surveillance audits (annually) are usually shorter.
Can we be both BRCGS and FSSC 22000 certified?
Yes — many manufacturers carry both, especially when serving customers in multiple regions. The systems share significant overlap (HACCP, prerequisite programs, allergen management) so dual certification cost is not double single. We can structure dual-cert implementations efficiently.
How much does BRCGS consulting cost?
Cost depends on company size, scope, current state, and number of sites. We quote per project after the free gap analysis. Get a free quote.
